Amrisar, Harshprateek: IHA Foundation and Earth Day Network, an NGO that began with the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Today, 49 years later, it partners with over 50,000 organisations in some 196 countries. Both the organisations have partnered together to take the environment forward in India. IHA Foundation and Earth Day Network had joined hands to campaign for “End Plastic Pollution”. The campaign which was successfully launched during Sikh Environmental Day in March 2018 had a significant impact on several institutions across India with one of the premiers being Sri Darbar Sahib Golden Temple, Amritsar. In March 2018, a delegation headed by Dr Satnam Singh Ahluwalia – Chairman IHA Foundation and Ms Karuna Singh Regional Director South Asia & Country Director India handed over a Memorandum to the Chief Secretary Dr.Roop Singh ji of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) with a request to ban plastic in Sri Darbar Sahib Golden Temple as part of our campaign “End Plastic Pollution”, our global theme 2018-19 – a IHA Foundation and Earth Day Network initiative, to work towards Plastic Free India. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) took prompt action and from April 1st, 2018, plastic was banned within Sri Darbar Sahib, Golden Temple complex, thereby making it a “No Plastic Zone” and also started using biodegradable materials. We are very thankful to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and SGPC for effectively implementing the ban on 1st April, 2018. This small initiative has brought about a bigger awareness in India as well as all over the world. A delegation of IHA Foundation and Earth Day Network represented by Dr Satnam Singh Ahluwalia – Chairman IHA Foundation along with Ms. Kathleen Rogers – World President Earth Day Network (Washington DC,USA), Ms Karuna Singh Regional Director South Asia & Country Director India and other dignitaries today on 5th February 2019 presented a certificate to Dr.Roop Singh ji, Chief Secretary of the Management Committee Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) along with his members for their initiative in making Sri Darbar Sahib Golden Temple Amritsar the first religious temple/institution in India to ban plastic, thereby taking the lead in saving our mother Earth.
